The site works again

Comments and entries were broken for a little while due to a PHP upgrade and some sloppiness on my part.  Everything should be back to normal now.

Site Tweaks

Since I've been in a scripting mood lately, I've taken the time to add a few new features to the site.

  • Entries and comments now support Markdown.  In fact I'm using it now.  Wow, huh?
  • Comments can now be previewed before being posted.
  • Alpha fade between multiple image entries.
  • Support for inline Flash video.
  • Updates, which were previously hackily just formatted and added on to post entries, are now stored as a list of items and dynamically styled.
  • Sidebars and functions with multiple queries are now cached (at some point I plan to do this with the features as well).
  • Posts now support custom inline image tags complete with easy defineable auto thumbing and styling.  See an example here.
  • Backend file browsers improved.
  • Global thumbnail system is now more manageable and supports custom thumb sizes.
  • Added backend thumb and image alignment controls.
  • Added option to enable/disable image borders

So there you go.  A lot of stuff that no one but me really cares about.

Goodbye old crew

Spidernaut has a place in the hills that he feels like he hasn't been spending enough time at, FutureMan is planning on opening up his own sweet shoppe somewhere in Old Town(e), and Dead Artist just wants to sleep.  The Thief in the background, bitter that his concept never made the cut in the first place, snuck into the picture unannounced (as thieves tend to do).

The upshot of all this is that I decided to release them from their contracts and redesign the site.  In the process I cleaned up the html and stylesheets that had, over a year or two of incremental changes, turned into a rickety old code jalopy.  The original design (with the help of some cheap stand ins) can still be found here.

RSS

So I've added an rss feed, and I'm using (what so far seems to be) the most excellent Feedburner to support it.    I'd never have imagined that something as simple as a basic rss feed could require such a sophisticated backend to manage, but I'm glad that someone did.  It's very cool.

Site work

I'm making a few modifications to the site, so please ignore any strange html, css, or page issues.  Of course, that's assuming that I don't break this sidebar functionality and you can still actually read this.
